run

in early December I decided I wanted to make running a regular thing in my world.  really, I was just finally acknowledging (or more accurately, finally doing something about) the nagging reality that I've not had any real exercise, on any regular basis, in my world for a while.  maybe not since she was little enough to wear on nice long hikes.  I am far from sedentary, and sure I take her out on the bike now and again, but I needed more.  I needed sweat.  to hear and feel my heart pumping all the way up in my ears.  and, while I do love a good long solo hike when I can get them, it'd help if I found something I could fit in more regularly.  something faster?  and thus the running.  I've got no real goal, distance-wise.  today I ran 4 miles and it felt good.  I feel like I could work up to twice(ish) that.  I prefer running on trails to asphalt.  made myself a playlist and am weeding through it as I find some songs work for me better than others.  so far Michael Franti never lets me down, and I like the Shins even though they're a bit mellow.  there are others, too.  feeling it all out.

Mike got me that fancy GPS watch for Christmas.  I joke that it's my tracking device, though really it doesn't work quite like that.  anyway, it's fun to know how far I've run and how far I'm going.  how far this will all go, I have no clue.  today I came home from my run and ate that bowl of yogurt and granola.  yum.

here's to wellness and good health in 2015~

  1. I am trying to look after myself better this year, but running a step too far for me a brisk walk is all I can manage. Good luck with your quest.

    1. aw thanks, Rachel- that makes me feel good! honestly I am impressed with myself too, mostly because I'm sticking it out (which isn't necessarily characteristic of me)

      a virtual run together, hurrah!

  5. I walk my dogs 2 miles every day. That used to be enough for me but not anymore. I'm starting to get a little squishy. (I'm sure getting older and loving to eat has something to do with that.) So, I started doing fitness yoga once a week as well as zumba. Hopefully that helps. Good luck with your running!

    1. I've got the same problem! ;) and seeing as how aging and enjoying food are both unlikely to cease (and truly I wouldn't want them to!), I'm trying this running thing.

I've heard zumba is loads of fun! I aim to do yoga more often that I do- and my tight calves and hips from running are demanding that attention, so I'm going to try to commit to yoga on the days I'm not running.

      thank you!

  6. That's awesome, and impressive that you are up to 4 miles. I enjoy running but hate running in the cold. I'd rather run in 100 degree weather than 30 degrees. But, it is one of the only exercises I can do with children - fast, right out of my house - but I don't run very far because I am often pushing a 50-70 pound stroller or have time constraints. I've gotten into yoga now too and do it at home (with the boys crawling over and under me when I'm in different positions). I love it.

    1. I ran 5.5 at Warren Wilson today Molly! woohooo! I haven't tried running in warmer weather yet, but actually found today's 35 degrees to be about perfect. I get hot quickly (of course I've been layered and wearing a hat, so there's that) and don't know how I'm going to like running when it is warmer. 50-70 pounds- ooph! I run on the days that Mike is home from the fire department. my goal is to do yoga on the other days.

    2. Good plan. I will run in the winter as long as it is warm enough that I don't have to wear a hat! I guess that is why yoga has become my winter exercise!

    3. ha! I find that I want to run when I DO need my hat- I like how it helps keep my earbuds in and makes me feel all snuggly and secure. yoga is so good.

  7. Good for you! Walking (the almost running kind) and running are two of my favorite things. Got my fourth 1/2 marathon coming up soon... :-)

  9. What a fabulous new activity. I've been trying to get the blood pumping as well, I feel so much more centered going about my day when I've had a nice workout. I just wish there was a way to knit while working out-wouldn't that be fabulous?

    1. ha! now that would be fun to watch. knitting while on a stationary recumbent bike or something along those lines? I bet if you came up with some kind of cardio knitting class you'd have some takers ;)

  10. I totally don't have the body for running. But I like to imagine I could be a runner. Though I have started doing yoga before bed and when I wake up. Makes a huge difference in my day and my sleep.

    1. oh now I don't know that I can say my body is necessarily *for* running, but I'm plugging along with it for now. I've got very flat feet and so I overpronate which can be tricky for my feet and knees. or at least it has in the past. but, I'm trying some new shoes and such and so far, so good. sounds like you are pretty disciplined with your yoga practice- please do rub some of that off on me! I want to commit to doing yoga at least on the days I'm not running.
