grey days miscellany

last night we had our first fire of the season.  it seemed a good response to the week of steady, chilly rain we've had.  a week of mostly soft, grey days with a bit of wind and heavy downpour thrown in to keep us on our toes.  I finished that wonderful, wonderful book.  today is a wet and cool October day and there has been coffee and french toast.  coffee and bananas.  I've been out to the garden a couple times to work in the rain because I just couldn't stand being inside any more.  neatened up, picked most of the remaining peppers and tomatillos and nearly all of the little key limes off the tree on the deck.  moved some baby kale and collard plants out of some cramped areas to maximize our fall plantings.  I glance at the peas out of the corner of my eye, pretending not to care.  I see you are flowering, I know it is late...... maybe.  maybe.

also, coming soon....... a master bathroom.  nothing like a week of rain to bring this tedious indoor project back to the front burner.

  2. Your kale plants make me angst-y. My groundhog has savored all but one of mine. Soft gray days here, too, and bathroom remodels as well. We haven't gathered firewood even if we wanted a fire. I cannot convince my husband that he will love the wood stove.I hope your week starts wonderfully.

    1. oh gosh I know what that is like. we didn't have groundhogs, but voles ate many, many of our plant starts this year (some of them not until they were pretty far a long, which was maddening!) and we got so incredibly frustrated. that is actually part of the reason why we recently adopted another cat. because I want a warm snuggly cat in my lap this winter and because.... voles.

I love the wood stove. love it.

      thank you- you too!

    1. thanks, we love it! we just got it late this spring, so this winter will be it's first real test.

the frame is metal, yes. we don't have a ton of space next to the wood stove so we were thrilled to find one that fits perfectly in the space we have. it was a gift from my in-laws and I think they got it from LL Bean.

  5. I read that book on vacation this summer - finished it in 4 nights! It is an amazing story, though I was a bit down about the ending. I have read a lot of books about WWII and this definitely approached the topic from a different angle. We could have used the woodstove this weekend, but we kinda have a thing about not starting it up until mid-Oct. I did break out a couple wool blankets though.

    1. oh I LOVED this book. I gobbled it up in 4 days, too! Oh I know- I was really hoping.....

I know about wanting to wait to start with the fires. Mike actually almost started one a week or so ago after he worked outside in the cold rain for a while, and I gave him a hard time about it because it was still September! It was chilly, about 62, in the house Saturday night, and it felt even colder with all the rain and wind.... so we went for it and it was great. of course now with the sunshine back and it warming up a bit, it will probably be a little while before we have another. this is a new stove for us and we are so looking forward to using it this winter!
