an outing

last week a friend and I packed up our kids and snacks and such and headed an hour or so north for a day.  a local homeschool collective was hosting a 'family earthskills day" out at the farm of one of the group's organizers.  we made (somewhat successfully) dreamcatchers and went for a plant walk and wandered around the property.  Claire drew pictures of the plants we learned about and creatively (and adorably) sounded out their names as best she could.  there was a fermentation workshop, candle-making, salve-making, yoga, fairy-house building and ongoing construction of a sweat lodge.  looks like the group plans to host these monthly, and I think I'll be heading out for another one.  there are more formal cooperative classes available with the group, I think, but for now I'll pass on those.  I like to casually dip my toes in these sort of 'group things'.  in ways that allow me to still stay somewhat on the outskirts, where I most like to be, just reaching in when I feel like it.

  1. Sounds like a beautiful day. I am glad you both enjoyed it.
Your words here resonated with me " I like to casually dip my toes in these sort of 'group things'. in ways that allow me to still stay somewhat on the outskirts, where I most like to be, just reaching in when I feel like it." So, so good! It's where I like to be too. Have a beautiful day!!

  2. I waffle back and forth with toe-dipping and wanting to lead and organize an event similar to this. I like the idea of it all, but I'd like to do something with more of a botanical/biological focused intent. Something slightly less smokey-feathery-earth-spirit (which is well and good in some situations), and something more geared to our age group. That dream catcher was fun for me to make, but obviously a little above the coordination of my kiddos at this point. I have so many ideas...but focusing the gumption to pull it off is another thing.

  5. Great photos - love the tail braiding! This sounds like a great group. I am not one for group things, but will probably have to push myself a bit out of my comfort zone as my little babe gets older.

    1. thank you! I am just getting acquainted with the group and what they put together, and hope to dip in from time to time for certain happenings.

I know what you mean..... I'm not a big group person either (unless that group is a smallish group of my close friends and acquaintances), but I see myself spreading out just a bit, the older she gets.

    1. it was pretty good! fun to spend the day with Lisa and our kiddos, and to explore a bit. as she said, it could have been a bit less "smokey-feathery-earth-spirit " (which I am TOTALLY into in my own time and space and when I feel called) and I felt some of the workshops could have been longer (or shorter) to accommodate more overall opportunities for learning, but all in all, it was a good experience.
