this week in my kitchen :: blog hop
so this series has brought me a good deal of motivation and inspiration, along with just the joy of essentially being invited to spy into other peoples' kitchens- how fun! thanks to inspiration from Stephinie, I tried the steaming method for hard boiled eggs, and am happy to report that those shells were indeed easy to get off. no more messing with vinegar and slowly picking apart the peels!
we are finally at the point with some of the greens that we are able to eat them without completely decimating the plant, hooray! Claire and I had another night this week (like last) that was essentially a box of Annie's mac and cheese, doctored up with broccoli rabe, kale, and parsley fresh from the garden. soon it will be post after post about the garden, I'm sure.
also, inspired by Lisa's post and her beautiful story about making these cupcakes with her son, along with the fact that we had extra eggs and a papa whose birthday came and went last month without a proper celebratory dessert, I made cupcakes. a yum, yum, yum. no one complained. there is but one left, and I think I'm about to frost it and see if we can split it three ways as a lunch dessert...
cheers!

It's the egg steaming a hoot? I am steaming eggs daily and now they look so pretty instead of sad little blobs with hunks missing.
ReplyDeleteLove that you and your sweet girl made cupcakes and she licked the beater, the best part!
oh yes, we both licked quite a bit of the batter ;)
DeleteAmazing, steaming an egg I can't wait to give it a go. I love the photo of your daughter licking the beater, cute!
ReplyDeleteit really works!
Deleteit always feels so good to get a big dose of inspiration :) i promised the kids annies mac and cheese this week... daddy is gone on a trip and i plan to keep dinner and bedtime as simple as possible!
ReplyDeletemy appreciation for simplicity grows almost daily now that I'm a parent!
DeleteI really have to try the egg steaming thing...this week for sure.
ReplyDeleteI was very pleasantly surprised by how well it works~
DeleteOk, now I need to read up on the egg steaming thing... I am so enjoying adding things from the garden to our food right now - and it's only the beginning. :-)
ReplyDeletesuch an exciting time, those first few weeks of being able to start really incorporating goodies from the garden!
DeleteI actually "Mmmmm!"-ed out loud when I saw that pasta! And now I woud really like some green stuff. Knowing how to doctor a canned or boxed basic is the best.
ReplyDeletethere's something about a bowl of cheesy noodles topped with a bit of garden goodness, isn't there? and thanks so much for sharing that cupcake recipe- DELISH!
DeleteOh it's been a cupcake kinda week! How great to be eating your homegrown greens. I want to start picking our kale, but know I should really leave it another couple of weeks. It's so tempting though!
ReplyDeleteooooooh, yum! just peeked in and saw your chocolate ones.
Deleteit's sooooo hard to hold off until the plants can really handle the picking, I know~
love the pasta dish, something I could eat daily! Glad you got around to a proper celebration for a birthday :)
ReplyDeleteit was about time we made a decent birthday dessert! last month was just so incredibly crazy, and we tried to celebrate and make something special out of what we had around, and it worked alright, but this was good.
Deleteugh. I missed it AGAIN! I was saying on my blog yesterday how badly I wanted to do it but my kitchen is all black and I never get good photos in there.
ReplyDeleteAnd yum, you're making me hungry.
well, my kitchen gets nice light, but it is made up of peeling laminate countertops, ugly mint green (think aqua fresh) paint on the walls and somewhat orange-y stained plywood cabinets. so, yeah- NOT fancy. not the white ceramic apron sink and butcher block countertops I want, but whatever. right? often I take my food outside the back door for pictures ;)
DeleteI could probably happily live off of doctored up cheesy noodles and cupcakes, if I HAD to.
