I know because....

it's here.  I know it.  Spring is really here and, for the most part, it's to stay.  I know because of the piles of eggs we're getting.  because the first trip to the nursery has been made.

because these busy ladies are flying in with legs loaded with pollen in all hues of yellow and gold.  we did end up losing one of our hives this winter, mysteriously.  they didn't freeze or starve, we know this because there is plenty of honey left in the hive and no clusters of dead frozen bees.  we're thinking something went wrong with the queen and they essentially died off, but who knows.  as pooh says, you never can tell with bees.  last week we picked up a new order of bees to fill that (ready and waiting with drawn comb and honey) hive.  fingers crossed with the massive head start they'll hit the ground running.  or, hit the air flying, I guess.

I know because the blueberry bushes are budding and leafing out,

because the yard is carpeted with tasty wild violets and the strawberry beds are bursting with flowers,

because the garlic bed is looking like this,

and the raspberry canes are looking like this.

there are new beds being formed, (this is a project of Mike's modeled after hugelkultur methods)

apple leaves are unfurling,

the fairy garden is again being tended with care,

new plants are getting settled in,

and another new project is in the works. (ducks? ducks would like this, right? who wants to help me sell Mike on a couple ducks? and how about guinea hens?)

happy spring, from our place in Western NC to wherever you call home!

    1. oh how I love that bonnet. they sell them at the living history farm we always go to when we visit my in-laws, and next time I want to buy several to give to her buddies (and perhaps even one for myself). thank you, Karen~

  3. Happy spring to you too! We thought spring was here, but it was snowing this morning...sigh. At least it doesn't hang around this time of year, just falls and melts :)

Love seeing all the green goodness, we are just starting to see little bits of green peeking from the soil.

    1. oh she loves that little garden. in the center is an old apple stump, and of course that's where the fairies live. our local gardening shop carries all sorts of fairy house accessories, and while I usually tend more towards making our own, she does have a little metal slide and a table/benches for her fairies' yard and garden. very, very sweet. the debate on the ducks is mostly regarding the garden and the poo, and the extent to which them getting in the garden and pooing in the yard would annoy the residents of this household ;) we shall see.

    1. I know, I love it! and I certainly love a plant sale, too~
good luck with your bees! is this your first time with them? since it's so early in the season, your bees shouldn't have any problem rearing a new queen on their own. that pooh, he's full of good one-liners, isn't he?
