weekending

Saturday was ballet and our standing coffee date
this time the coffee date was a tad different as it was spent
filling out paperwork
for our wills

there was a group of 'young lawyers' offering their services in preparing wills and such
for firefighters, paramedics and police officers (and their spouses) at no charge
so we took them up on it

it felt a little odd discussing some of the things that needed to be addressed
'no life support in the event I am in a permanent vegetative state'
'in the event I become mentally incapacitated so-and-so shall have the authority
to make decisions for me'
putting on paper the names of people
whom we'd trust to take over the care of our little one should the unthinkable happen...
(one example of a time I actually can say I 'shuddered to think' of something)

but it feels good to have it all squared away because
well
we won't live forever

mid to high sixties, sunny
we got the bike out a couple times over the weekend

some happy boxes were delivered
a couple of new books,
a sweet thank you package from a blog swapper
the very generous Marcela at Naturally Fun Days sent along two adorable garlands,
the heart one was immediately claimed by Claire, who wished to use it as a dress-up belt
but is alright with it going on her wall instead
I'm still deciding where to put the lovely and long circle garland

sugaring season is now officially over for us
we ended up with somewhere around 4 gallons of syrup, I believe
I'll do an actual count tomorrow

making progress with The Goldfinch, and really enjoying it

  2. Our culture seems to have a problem with death, but it's something that must be prepared for, it's important. Good for you in getting things together.

I have had Making an Impression on my list for too long now. Please let me know how you like it.

You had a great sugaring season, not something we can do here so I am a little envious ;) Enjoy.

    2. it definitely feels good having it all taken care of.

so far I've only peeked through the book and it looks beautiful! jenny (that is also recommending it here) has made some gorgeous stamps using the book- there are pictures on her beautiful blog)

we are loving the sugaring. this was year two, and though the weather had it going back and forth for a while, it was great.

  3. We made wills when we took a trip to Italy in 2000. We also wrote letters to each daughter about our wishes for them in case we were gone. We updated the letters a few years ago. It might be time to do that again. We cried the entire time we wrote those letters.

    1. oh I love the ideas of those letters! I write to my daughter every year on her birthday and mother's day and am keeping them in a box for her for when she's older... but they aren't necessarily the same kind of letters, more along the lines of what we're up to and stories from our times together in these earlier years. I can imagine it being an emotional letter to write, yours. Maybe I'll add one like that to the box.

  4. Yes, when we started having kids we did our official will. With some interesting family dynamics we thought it best to make clear who we wanted to raise our kids if we were in heaven. Congratulations on the 4 gallons of syrup - that's a nice supply!

    1. definitely best to have it all squared away and 'official' as to whom you want your child(ren) to live with in the event of a tragedy. feels good to have it all done and on paper now.

thanks, yes it is! we are happy with it, to be sure.

  5. We did our wills recently...that same shudder came over me too. But it does feel good to have it all sorted out. That's great on syrup, we haven't even tapped yet.

    1. yes it's so different down here- we tapped on January 19th this year and I imagine folks up north weren't even really thinking of it all yet. we're getting days in the 50s (and occasionally 60s) now, the trees are starting to set buds, and the sap completely changed to let us know the show was over.

  6. I'm impressed that you tap your trees and make syrup. That is awesome! How many trees do you tap?
We did our wills this year too. Glad to have it done.

    1. we started last year with four large trees and this year we added another 5 medium-sized trees to the mix. they are all in our neighborhood, though none are on our property. as you may already know they aren't so common down here, but given our elevation they can be found in the woods here and there (I've seen quite a few in the woods in Burnsville) and they do fine if planted. Wonder if there are any around you in Fairview?

yes, good to have it all squared away.

    2. We don't have many in Fairview--a few planted. We do have red maples and I've heard you can tap them, but I think the ratio of sap to syrup is something like 150:1.

    1. I almost ordered his big book on fermentation, but it was $35 and so I decided to get the baby book first and see where it takes me~ I haven't read (or even heard of, actually) that Michael Pollan book, I'll have to check it out.

      thanks. yes, important stuff.

  10. Occasionally we discuss what we wish to happen in the event something happens to one of us, but I think we both find it uncomfortable, especially hubby. But it is an important subject and one we really need to address soon I guess as we are selling his old house and all our capital will be tied up in this place :)

    1. we've talked about it off and on over the years and I never felt really moved to actually get it done until I started thinking about what would happen to our daughter if we were both to die before her. I just didn't want it to be left up in the air, you know?

  11. love the new header :) Yes, talking about lawyery topics is never fun but surely most needed. My daughter graduates from law school this may!!!!
