weekending

We had a wonderful early visit with my mom, brother, and his girlfriend on Saturday morning.  An early Christmas celebration.  We collaborated on a play dough snowman, visited, munched on peppermint bark and fresh bread, and exchanged a few gifts in front of the (entirely unnecessary on the balmy first day of winter that we had) fire.

Afterwards, a drive to the big city (well, Asheville) for the birthday party of one of Claire's dearest friends.  It was at an ice cream shop.  And so for lunch on the first day of winter I had a split scoop of salted caramel and coconut milk ginger ice cream.  A bit later and Claire and I found ourselves back at the Noodle Shop, splitting another bowl of da lu noodles to balance out the sweet with a little savory and pungent.  We had a seat right by the window and did a lot of people watching along with our eating.  Home, then.

It was dark already and we'd had that weird late lunch/early dinner meal and so it was popcorn for dinner by candlelight, after talking about the shortest day, lighting some candles, and singing a sweet little song.

Early to bed.  Today, plans of staying put.  A morning with papa, more rain, and then an afternoon with more popcorn (some strung up for the birds), more lip balm making, a visit to neighbors, and just now- some cookie making.

    1. I think I may always be in the mood for noodles. most definitely these particular noodles- big, fat rice noodles in a bowl of egg drop based soup with lots of cabbages and bok choy, other veggies, cilantro, and a hearty plop of red chili oil..... mmmmmmmmmmm.

it was a great surprise that my brother and his girlfriend joined in- they live just about 25 minutes away, but our schedules don't often intersect. working on that.

  2. Sounds lovely! I'm running to WF after lunch since Mr. will be home and I can go ALONE. I plan to have either noodles or a salmon/rice bowl. And I plan to get everything I need so I can tuck in the next few days.

    Merry Christmas!

    1. Ohhhhh... shopping/dining alone is such a treat. And I think so with just one little one so what a gift it must be for you! Tucking in is just about my favorite thing. we were out and about just a bit today, but stayed right in town here and it was pretty low key. the colder nights are back now and I'm ready to hang by the fire for the next few days before we head north for a visit.

      Merry Christmas to you, too!
