0, 1, 2..... and now, 3

three years (and two days) ago on a cold, cold, snowy january morning.....

two years (and two days) ago, on another cold january day....

one year (and two days) ago, playing on the red caboose in town....

two days ago.  she turned three in the early morning and we greeted her (in the not quite as early morning) by singing happy birthday.  she listened with eyes squeezed tight, and a huge grin spread across her little face.

first things first, we directed her attention to the mass under a blanket on the couch.  she approached cautiously and, when the whole thing moved, stepped away a bit scared.  I helped her uncover what was hiding.... 25 balloons.  we are still having balloon fun around here.

and then it was time to get down to the business of breakfast.  she'd requested blueberry muffins.  thankfully, something that was totally doable.  she and papa were on it.

as the muffins baked, she opened her gifts.  a new drawing pad and pencil, some tea, a cash register, flowers.... pretty simple

and then it was time to eat.  and drink.  hot cocoa for her, in the santa mug of course.  I think she is under the impression that hot cocoa must be enjoyed out of a santa mug, and nothing else.  I am okay with that.

candles lit, songs sung.  and hello, three.

the day continued in a somewhat typical lazy fashion.  there were surprise guests bearing gifts, cards to open, dinner out.  ice cream included.  now I just need to get my letter written (one each year on her birthday and mother's day) and add it to the growing pile in her little box.  happy happy birthday sweet one.

  1. That looks like a lovely cosy birthday morning. I think three is a great age, so many questions and hilarious things they do (like the santa mug thing). It's so nice that you are starting traditions early on like this :)

  2. Happy Birthday, sweet girl! Congratulations, lovely Mama! What a beautiful morning you had - simple and memorable. In a couple of months my son will turn 3 (at 5:04 as well but in the afternoon!) and I must say that I am looking forward to it - sometimes I have to remind myself that he is still only 2 and so little because sometimes it is like having a teenager in the house - the conversations, the negotiations, the moods. Wishing you a wonderful year full of lovely days that start in a lazy way. Em x

    1. Thanks, Emily! I remembered that he's just a little younger than Claire~ happy soon to be birthday. I feel (felt?) the same way about her and two. Little ticking time bombs sometimes with the emotional highs and lows~ imagine if we, as adults, always acted the way we actually felt at any given time! what an interesting (and maybe a bit unnerving) world it'd be. She sometimes acts and seems older than she is, so when she 'acts her age' I am surprised sometimes and have to remind myself of where we're truly at. (wherever THAT is!)

lazily started days is where we're usually at- I'm hoping to get to where I start mine a bit earlier then she does, but still with enough sleep under my belt. just need to send myself to bed at a decent hour..... some day soon, perhaps!
